Books that penetrate the cities. Reflecting on m Books that penetrate the cities.

Reflecting on my upcoming book “Arabian Transfer” - following suggestions by Shamoon Zamir.

Of course Dos Passos “Manhattan Transfer” has deeply influenced the editing of my own book.
I didn’t know Andrei Bely's “Petersburg”, I ordered an old copy that arrived today. Will start reading tonight.
The other two are fortunate findings in my library, now I am going to read them again. These are two first editions in Italian that belonged to my great uncle, printed in 1931 and 1933 in Milan.

Again from “Temporary Cities. Resisting Transien Again from “Temporary Cities. Resisting Transience in Arabia”, by Yasser Elsheshtawy (Routledge 2020). Thank you Yasser for your acknowledgement, it is good (and rare) to find that your work can influence that of other disciplines. That’s a good thing about being a photographer!

“Michele Nastasi (whose photograph appears on the back cover of this book) is a Milan based photographer and our numerous encounters were always fun and informative – in many ways influencing my approach to photographing cityscapes, a crucial element in laying out the case for the Temporary City”. Heartly thanks to Yasser Elsheshtawy for mentionin Heartly thanks to Yasser Elsheshtawy for mentioning me in his book “Temporary Cities. Resisting Transience in Arabia” (Routledge 2020) and for his generous appraisal of my work. A page of this very solid and passionate book is dedicated to the encounters that Yasser had in Dubai with Bas Princen and myself. Here’s my part - I seriously share the idea that photography can not only represent but also capture sentiments of places, cities.
“Another photographer who is taking a different approach is the Milan-based Michele Nastasi. His work oscillates between the commercial requirements of his clients and commissioned projects (by developers and city officials) requiring him to frame buildings in a conventional way, minimizing appearances of distracting elements such as people. But there is another side of his work which seeks to go beyond the formal aspects of a still image, to also suggest a critical discourse, as he conveyed to me in numerous discussions we had in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Milan. One of his most haunting images […] is that of cricket players on an abandoned site in Satwa, Dubai with the high-rises of Sheikh Zayed in the background. The image conveys many of the qualities that are pervasive in the city. In many ways, in my own attempts at photographing and representing the khaliji city, I am also trying to capture such sentiments.”
