E’ uscito un nuovo libro: Seeing trough Gulf Cities. Urbanization in and from the Arabian Peninsula, che ho pubblicato come fotografo e come autore con e grazie a Harvey Molotch (sociologo, NYU) e Davide Ponzini (urbanista, Politecnico di Milano). Il libro è un viaggio nella la complessa realtà delle città del Golfo Persico, che attraverso fotografie, grafiche e testi, sono viste in rapporto ad altre città europee, americane e asiatiche. Il confronto mette in luce certi aspetti peculiari delle città del Golfo e della cultura urbana occidentale, mostrando come il Golfo non sia più un mero recettore di modelli occidentali, ma sia esso stesso diventato un modello di riferimento attivo globalmente.
Nel libro sono pubblicate immagini di Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait City, Manama, Riyadh, New York, Parigi, Londra, Barcellona, Hong Kong, Singapore, Milano, Istanbul e Baku, che ho scattato tra il 2008 e il 2021. Il volume contiene anche un mio testo, “Gulf Cities as Lens”, che racconta il mio modo di lavorare nelle città mettendo in campo una serie di riflessioni metodologiche sull’utilizzo della fotografia e delle immagini in diversi contesti di ricerca.
A new book is out: Seeing through Gulf Cities. Urbanization in and from the Arabian Peninsula, which I published as a photographer and as an author with and thanks to Harvey Molotch (sociologist, NYU) and Davide Ponzini (urban planner, Politecnico di Milano). The book is a journey in the complex reality of the cities of the Persian Gulf, which through photographs, graphics and texts are seen in relation to other European, American and Asian cities. The comparison highlights certain peculiar aspects of the cities of the Gulf and of Western urban culture, showing how the Gulf is no longer a mere receptor of Western models, but has itself become a reference model which is globally active.
The book contains images of Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait City, Manama, Riyadh, New York, Paris, London, Barcelona, Hong Kong, Singapore, Milan, Istanbul and Baku, which I took between 2008 and 2021. The volume also contains a text of mine, “Gulf Cities as Lens”, in which I describe my way of working in cities and put to play a series of methodological reflections on the use of photography and images in different contexts of research.
